Arnaud (Chamfort: A Biography) takes readers on a journey that presents the extraordinary but also complicated life of Jean Cocteau (1889–1963). Arnaud describes an individual who was often misunderstood and unfairly considered an opportunist or imitator of other writers. His depiction of Cocteau’s opium addiction and attempts at detox is particularly fascinating. This work is also an excellent study of human dynamics with friends coming in and out of the artist’s life. (…) Arnaud writes sympathetically and movingly about this one-way love affair – Radiguet was irreversibly heterosexual – and the depth of Cocteau’s despair when Radiguet died of typhoid in December 1923 (…) Another subject Arnaud treats at length and with subtlety is the extraordinary animosity Cocteau encountered from the surrealist group. I’ve seen this long, meticulously and painstakingly researched and exhaustively detailed biography of Jean Cocteau described as “monumental” and “a landmark” – and I totally agree. Originally published in France in 2003 it has now been translated into English (and what a task that must have been) – and now around 1,000 pages of densely written text of often convoluted and high-flown narrative is now available to a wider audience. This is not a book for the faint-hearted as it demands a certain amount of stamina to wade through it but the effort is richly rewarded. It’s a sweeping study of a complex artist who knew just about everyone who was anyone during his long life, which makes the biography not only fascinating in itself but also opens a window into a whole range of other artists’ lives, from Picasso to Nijinsky, Coco Chanel to Proust and many many others on the way. A very impressive book indeed.«

« All biography is both an act of homage and a labour of dissection,
and all biographers are jealous of their subjects, write Duncan FALLOWELL in the Spectator (01/7/2017). Most keep it cool, but some like it hot and have created a distinct category in which jealousy becomes murder followed by necromancy: the one they hug is asphyxiated — but lo! — they breathe their own air back into it. Sartre’s book on Jean Genet is such a work, as are Brigid Brophy’s on Ronald Firbank and Roger Lewis’s on Anthony Burgess. Claude Arnaud’s on Jean Cocteau is yet another. Its approach is intensely romantic. Everyone is heaving in lurid colours. Arnaud certainly knows his material; and that he carefully references printed sources along the way is adroit, a necessity to the illusion, like the pins which hold a provisional costume together. The result is a mind-boggling excursion through Cocteau’s many milieux: from his teenage beginnings as a poet in Proustian Paris; through the Great War and the Modern movement of the 1920s in collaboration with Diaghilev, Satie, Stravinsky and Picasso; followed by the macabre uncertainties of the 1930s and later in Nazi-occupied Paris; and on to postwar film making and international celebrity. The parade of boyfriends and benefactresses is spectacular, and the near-lifelong opium addiction is paralleled by the manner in which the story moves forward in a kind of peristaltic reverie ». « Les plus connus des avant-gardiste inconnus n’ont jamais manqué de biographes – à commencer par eux-mêmes! -, mais la biographie épique publiée en 2003 par Claude ARNAUD, aujourd’hui disponible en anglais dans la traduction de Lauren Elkin et Charlotte Mandell, est la première à réussir l’impossible, en offrant un récit continu de la vie de COCTEAU, au lieu d’une sélection de hauts faits. Le résultat tient en un pavé complexe de plus de 1000 pages, dont l’amplitude n’est pas vaine; elle est l’espace nécessaire pour donner corps à l’histoire vécue par COCTEAU. Si quelques-unes des précédents biographies, celle de Francis Steegmuller (1970) en particulier, qui faisait référence, sont plus lisibles, c’est qu’elles n’étaient pas aussi ambitieuses. L’on doit à Claude ARNAUD d’avoir fait le travail que personne avant lui n’avait eu l’énergie de faire…

Cette longue, méticuleuse, exhaustive et scrupuleuse biographie de COCTEAU avait été qualifiée de « marquante » et de « monumentale« , ce que je le confirme absolument . Publiée en France en 2003, elle vient d’être traduite en anglais (quel effort cela a dû demander! ) – et ces mille pages denses, parfois alambiquées sinon ampoulées, sont maintenant accessible à une plus large audience. Ce n’est pas un livre pour les craintifs, il demande de l’énergie pour en venir à bout, mais l’effort est très largement récompensé. C’est une analyse d’envergure d’un artiste complexe qui aura connu tout le monde qui fut quelque chose durant sa long vie, ce qui rend fascinante cette biographie, qui ouvre sur la vie d’un nombre considérables d’autres artistes, de Picasso à Nijinsky, de Coco Chanel à Proust et tant d’autres. Un livre très impressionnant. »

« La biographie d’ARNAUD est très longue (un bon millier de pages, en comprenant l’index), mais
elle l’est rarement inutilement, écrit KEVIN JACKSON dans cet article. Son style – transposé en anglais avec l’aide, note-t-il, de Donna TARTT – est aussi lyrique qu’affranchi des règles de grammaire. Il s’autorise des moments d’excès spéculatifs qui frapperont le lecteur, comme ce: « Il était si joyeux certains jours qu’il ressemblait à un foetus barbouillant les murs de son placenta ». Hors mesure, sans aucun doute, mais parfaitement adapté à son flamboyant sujet. Jean-Luc GODARD écrivit un article célébrant COCTEAU où il demandait, de façon récurrente: » Quand avez-vous vu pour la dernière fois ORPHEE? » Le prodige du livre d’ARNAUD est qu’il nous donne non seulement l’envie de revoir ce film, mais d’explorer, dans son intégralité, l’univers à la fois fascinant et délicat de COCTEAU (…) Avons-nous eu tort de le négliger? Certainement. Le portrait à la fois éloquent et amoureux qu’ARNAUD fait de son héros devrait persuader jusqu’au plus enragé des Cocteauphobes qu’on se prive par là d’un grand plaisir. »
