Charles NAJMAN : 1956/2016

Douloureux d’évoquer la mort de celui qui fut plus qu’un ami, l’un de ces complices sans lesquels l’existence paraîtrait insignifiante, absurde, ou même insupportable, un authentique frère existentiel. Charles NAJMAN était la vie, la gaité et l’intelligence incarnée, une source constante de propositions – vitales, artistiques et intellectuelles – mais aussi de contradiction et de drôlerie : rien d’académique, de professoral, de convenu dans sa façon d’associer les formes, les idées, les êtres, sans aucun respect des frontières établies; penser avec Charles NAJMAN, c’était danser avec son esprit.
Ses obsèques ont été célébrées au cimetière de Bagneux, le vendredi 22 juillet 2016. Charles a rejoint son père et son frère Maurice dans le caveau familial devant une foule émue par sa disparition foudroyante. Emmanuelle HONORIN a rendu hommage au compagnon de vie, Olivier ASSAYAS au cinéaste, Laénnec HURBON à l’amoureux d’Haïti, Claude ARNAUD à l’ami, Gérard DELAHAYE et Hélène FELDHANDLER à l’inspirateur, entre autres.

Le 27 septembre 2016, Yale University press publie aux USA (et le 21 novembre en GRANDE-BRETAGNE) la version anglo-saxonne de la biographe que Claude ARNAUD consacra, en 2003, à Jean COCTEAU. Traduite par Lauren Elkin et Charlotte Mandell, légèrement adaptée par l’auteur. Lauren Elkin est maître de conférence en anglais et en littérature comparée à l’ American University de Paris. Régulièrement primée, Charlotte Mandell est la traductrice de plus de trente ouvrages, romans ou essais.
