\u00ab\u00a0Arnaud\u2019s biography is very long (over a thousand pages, including index), but it seldom feels padded<\/strong><\/span>, writes KEVIN JACKSON<\/strong> in his review. His\"\"<\/a> style \u2013 rendered into English with, he notes, some help from Donna TARTT<\/strong> \u2013 is as lyrical as it is ungrammatical, and he allows himself moments of speculative excess that will strike many readers as silly: \u2018Some days he was so full of joy that he looked like a fetus daubing the wall with his placenta.\u2019 Over the top, to be sure, and yet quite well suited to his flamboyant subject.<\/strong> <\/span>Jean-Luc Godard once wrote an article in praise of Cocteau that repeatedly asked, \u2018When did you last see Orph\u00e9e<\/em>?<\/strong>\u2019 The triumph of Arnaud\u2019s work is that it makes you keen not just to watch that great film again but to explore the whole of Cocteau\u2019s delicate, fascinating universe.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
