Rarement \u00e0 tirer de l’exp\u00e9rience personnelle un artefact qui ait, pour le lecteur, valeur d’exorcisme.<\/span> Il faut remonter au ROUSSEAU<\/span><\/strong> des \u00ab\u00a0Confessions<\/em>\u00ab\u00a0, retourner \u00e0 \u00ab\u00a0l’\u00c2ge d’homme<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb de Michel LEIRIS<\/span><\/strong>, se r\u00e9f\u00e9rer, plus pr\u00e8s de nous, \u00e0 nombre d’\u00e9crits de Pierre MERTENS<\/span><\/strong> pour mesurer la g\u00e9n\u00e9rosit\u00e9 qu’il faut \u00e0 un auteur pour mettre son coeur \u00e0 nu au point d’aider ses semblables<\/span> \u00e0 cesser de se jouer la com\u00e9die \u00e0 eux-m\u00eames<\/span>. Un livre s’impose dans cette rentr\u00e9e plus surabondante que jamais (…) pour cette facult\u00e9 de faire avancer la connaissance de l’humain, trop humain.<\/span> Un histoire de fratrie qui s’inscrit dans le sillage des Karamazov<\/span>, qui r\u00e9v\u00e8le les d\u00e9mons qui peuvent hanter les familles, et montre comment un idiot au sens dosto\u00efevskien<\/span> peut survivre \u00e0 une trag\u00e9die familiale.<\/strong><\/h6>\n
\u00ab\u00a0Qu’as-tu fait de tes fr\u00e8res?<\/span>\u00a0\u00bb a cette force des livres qui saturent la m\u00e9moire<\/span>, qui seront lus et relus, que l’on se recommande entre compagnons d’\u00e2me. L’auteur, Claude ARNAUD<\/span><\/strong>,<\/span> n’a \u00e9crit en quinze ans que deux romans, mais surtout deux biographies d’une rare qualit\u00e9, l’une sur CHAMFORT<\/span>, l’autre, monumentale, sur COCTEAU<\/span> (Gallimard, 2003), et puis un essai magistral<\/span>, \u00ab\u00a0Qui dit je en nous?\u00a0\u00bb que le Femina<\/span> a couronn\u00e9 en 2006. \u00ab\u00a0Qu’as-tu fait de tes fr\u00e8res? est l’application de cette question implicite \u00e0 lui-m\u00eame.<\/span> Troisi\u00e8me fils, apr\u00e8s deux fr\u00e8res brillantissimes<\/span>, d’un couple de moyenne bourgeoisie de province install\u00e9 \u00e0 la lisi\u00e8re du XVI\u00b0 arrondissement et de Boulogne, il est le seul \u00e0 devoir admettre qu’il a \u00e9chapp\u00e9 au processus de d\u00e9molition<\/span> que peut \u00eatre \u00e0 la vie. Comment? A quel prix? Le livre apporte quelques r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 cette interrogation abyssale.<\/strong><\/h6>\n
\u00ab\u00a0Chaque chapitre est comme une station d’un calvaire d’apprentissage<\/span>. L’auteur s’impose une honn\u00eatet\u00e9 absolue<\/span>, qui se moque des tabous, appelle un chat un chat (y compris quelques gros matous<\/span> comme Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric MITTERRAND<\/strong> et Roland BARTHES<\/span>), refl\u00e8te le grand remue-m\u00e9nage des moeurs et des id\u00e9es dans les ann\u00e9es 60-70<\/span>, int\u00e8gre les drames intimes dans la grande fresque de l’Histoire,<\/span> et montre comment un \u00eatre s’\u00e9difie parmi les d\u00e9combres<\/span>, \u00e0 force d’essais et d’erreurs, sans tomber une seconde dans la complaisance<\/span>. La famille qu\u2019on nous pr\u00e9sente tient du mod\u00e8le<\/span>.<\/strong> Un p\u00e8re autoritaire, mais qui a bien r\u00e9ussi. Une m\u00e8re lettr\u00e9e et fine.<\/span><\/strong> Trois fils. L\u2019a\u00een\u00e9, Pierre<\/strong><\/span>, doit devenir une de ces b\u00eates \u00e0 concours comme on les aime en France<\/strong>. Les grandes \u00e9coles lui tendront les bras. Philippe<\/strong>, le pu\u00een\u00e9, s\u2019annonce brillant. Quant au petit Clodion<\/strong><\/span>, il reste un enfant. Et puis voil\u00e0! \u00ab\u00a0Claude ARNAUD<\/strong><\/span> is a writer (…) He and his two older brothers used to devour literary classics<\/strong> under the sheets with flashlights long past their bedtime. Intelligent, impeccably cultured,<\/strong><\/span> and living just on the edge of Paris\u2019s most elegant XVIth arrondissement, it isn\u2019t that they showed great promise exactly<\/span><\/strong>; rather they were all set to follow the expected path of Parisian bourgeois boys from posh\u00a0lyc\u00e9e<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0grandes \u00e9coles<\/em>\u00a0to a place among the country\u2019s elite<\/strong>\u2014the promise, like all social promises, fulfilled in advance and ready to be endlessly reproduced and passed on in orderly bourgeois fashion<\/span><\/strong>. But nothing goes quite as planned. The mother dies<\/strong>, two of the brothers turn out to be gay (or something like that; it\u2019s France<\/strong>), the eldest descends into madness, and the father just doesn\u2019t know what hit him.<\/strong> Needless to say, May \u201968 didn\u2019t help either.<\/span><\/strong> Claude\u2019s life takes him from one leftist group, and one pseudonym, to another, providing Arnaud<\/span> with an opportunity to give us an inside look into the various political movements of the seventies, followed by the growing disillusion that led to the rather pathetic<\/span>, mercantile and AIDS-ravaged 1980s<\/span><\/strong>. Along the way, we meet famous people. Claude<\/span><\/strong>, as it happens, tells briefly of an evening, rue de Vaugirard, where he encounters Foucault, Guibert<\/span> and Lindon<\/strong>. Guattari<\/strong><\/span> (as in \u201cDeleuze and\u201d) is a recurring presence in the book, and there are a few lovely pages on<\/span><\/strong> Roland Barthes<\/strong>, another homo who liked to read, lecturing at the Coll\u00e8ge de France. But other than that, this part of the book is the least compelling. We get to spend much time at the Sept, the Palace and other famous Parisian nightspots of the era in the company of beautiful people (…) Unless, of course, the plan was to convey his own creeping boredom with the whole thing.<\/h6>\n
\u00ab\u00a0The story picks up again when the seventies come to a close and the family reappears on the other side of all the turmoil.<\/strong><\/span> Madness, it turns out, had been a narrative thread all along, from the Corsican uncle roaming carefree in the mother\u2019s village, to Guattari\u2019s<\/span> utopian antipsychiatry experiments<\/strong>, to Claude\u2019s<\/span><\/strong> brother Pierre\u2019s<\/strong> slow but brutal unraveling in a world that, when all is said and done, remains unforgiving to its misfits.
